Yesterday was our first time playing Wichita!
In the early evening we hit up a gorgeous riverside park and hung out with the ducks before having a fantastic night at Kirby’s Beer Store. The dive bar was perfection, covered head to toe in band stickers, bumper stickers, all the stickers, and good vibes.
We played with Lt. Frog- a sometimes punk sometimes blues-y, sometimes just out there cool band from the area as well as The Pre-Existing Conniptions. The Pre-Existing Conniptions is another cello band-and Ronnie, the lead singer/cellist used her instrument in ways I haven’t seen before. It’s really neat to see how cellists use their instruments, because there really is nothing to go off of-there isn’t a standard set up-and as a rule I’ve noticed that cello pick-ups and electric cellos are kind of janky in general compared to electric guitars- so it makes for an incredibly wide range of sounds and styles you can get from the instrument. Their sound reminded me of early Breathe Owl Breathe (Michigan cello folk band), but with a bit more of a driving rock edge.
Some day I am going to make a post on all the cello-bands we have been lucky to play with across the country. There are still more in store for this upcoming tour *cough cough* *Oregon* :)
Today is one of our longest drives. Right now we are heading to Colorado Springs. This part of the country that we are driving through is super flat but stunningly beautiful in the fact that you can see for miles in every direction.
Also an update on my letters: STILL HAVEN’T FOUND A BLUE BOX! I made a list to lament this fact.
Places you’d think you can find blue-box public mail boxes but cannot
- The entire state of Kansas
- College Campuses (Kirby’s Beer Store was near one so I went on a long walk.. found nothing)
- Gas Stations
- Most grocery stores
Keep you posted on when I find the post.
Sending love from this gorgeous, flat, and expansive part of America.
